The Shahada in the Call to Prayer
The Shahada at the Heart of the Call
In the call to prayer, the Shahada is recalled in a clear voice,
so that the heart may remember.
The believer does not affirm only for himself:
he hears again what forms the foundation of his faith.
The adhān marks the beginning of the time of prayer.
And at the heart of this call stands the Shahada.
It opens the moment,
it orients the intention,
it prepares the meeting with Allah.
The Prophet Muḥammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
“No jinn, no human being, and nothing at all hears the reach of the muezzin’s voice except that it will testify for him on the Day of Resurrection.”
Reported by al-Bukhārī — classified as ṣaḥīḥ.
Explanation
This hadith shows that the call to prayer is not an ordinary sound.
Every creature that hears it becomes a witness for the muezzin on the Day of Resurrection.
Nothing that hears the adhān is lost with Allah.
Meaning of Muezzin ?
Muezzin means “the one who calls."
It is the person who proclaims the adhān and invites people to prayer,
reminding them of the oneness of Allah and the message of the Prophet Muḥammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

History of the Call to Prayer
How was the call to prayer born?
When the Muslims of Medina were seeking a way to call people to prayer, several ideas were suggested: a bell like the Christians, a horn like the Jews… but none of them felt right.
Then a Companion, ʿAbdullāh ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, had a dream in which a man taught him the exact words of the adhān.
He immediately went to the Prophet Muḥammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and told him what he had seen.
The Prophet Muḥammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
“It is a true dream, by the will of Allah.
Teach it to Bilāl, for his voice is stronger than yours.”
Bilāl ibn Rabāḥ, may Allah be pleased with him, was then entrusted with proclaiming the adhān for the first time.
This account is reported by Abū Dāwūd and at-Tirmidhī, and it is classified as authentic by the scholars.
It shows that:
the adhān is not a human invention,
it was confirmed by revelation,
and it was entrusted to a chosen voice to carry the reminder.
Thus, from its very origin, the call to prayer is linked to the Shahada—
not as a simple signal,
but as a word willed and validated by Allah.

How Are the Prayer Times Determined?
The times of prayer are not set by an arbitrary clock.
They are tied to visible signs in the sky: the movement of the sun, light, shadow, and dawn.
The Prophet Muḥammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, learned these moments through the teaching of the angel Jibrīl.
It is reported that Jibrīl came and led the Prophet Muḥammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in prayer over two consecutive days:
He prayed Ẓuhr when the sun passed its highest point in the sky.
He prayed ʿAṣr when the shadow of an object became equal to its height.
He prayed Maghrib when the sun set.
He prayed ʿIshāʾ when the glow of twilight disappeared.
He prayed Fajr at the appearance of dawn.
Then, on the following day, he prayed each prayer at the end of its time and said:
“The time of each prayer lies between these two moments.”
Reported by Muslim — classified as ṣaḥīḥ.
This hadith shows that every prayer is linked to a precise natural sign:
Fajr begins with the first light of dawn.
Ẓuhr begins when the sun passes its highest point.
ʿAṣr begins when an object’s shadow equals its height.
Maghrib begins as soon as the sun disappears below the horizon.
ʿIshāʾ begins when the last light of twilight fades away.
Prayer is therefore not separated from the world.
It is aligned with the rhythm of creation.
The sun moves,
the shadow stretches,
light appears and fades—
and at each stage, the adhān recalls faith.
The believer does not pray outside of time.
He prays in harmony with the sky.
