How are the dates determined?
The dates of Ramadan are first estimated using astronomical calculations.
Astronomers determine the precise moment of the new moon, called the "synodicy," when the Earth, Moon, and Sun are aligned. At this time, the Moon is not visible from Earth.
After the synodicy, the Moon gradually moves away from the Sun, and a thin crescent appears.
To know whether it can be observed, several factors are studied:
the age of the moon (time elapsed since the conjunction)
its height above the horizon at sunset
the time between sunset and moonset
visibility depending on the region of the world
These calculations make it possible to announce a very probable date for the beginning of Ramadan.
However, according to Islamic tradition, the start of the month is only confirmed after the actual sighting of the crescent moon.
That is why we always speak of an estimated date until the Night of Doubt.

The Night of Doubt 2026: how is the date determined?

The official date for the beginning of the month of Ramadan is confirmed on the Night of Doubt.
On February 17, 2026, inshaAllah, observers will watch the sky to sight the new crescent moon (hilal).
If the crescent is visible, fasting begins the next day
If it is not visible, the month of Sha‘ban is completed to 30 days, and Ramadan begins the following day

Why do the ramadan's dates change every year?
The Muslim calendar is lunar, while the Gregorian calendar is solar.
A lunar year has about 354 days. This difference explains why Ramadan gradually moves through the seasons. In 2026, it will take place between the end of winter and the beginning of spring.

Key dates for the end of the month
The last 10 days: the most spiritually intense period, including Laylat al-Qadr, a night better than a thousand months
Zakat al-Fitr: obligatory charity to be given before the Eid prayer
